Japan Watching

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Quite literally.

Interesting article here on the latest entitled “Billboards That Can See You” from the Wall Street Journal.

A traditional vending machine is replaced by a giant touch sensitive screen.  A camera captures their image and a sensor determines the person’s gender and approximate age.

With that the technology can recommend what drink the thirsty would-be customer might like as well as record what they actually bought.

Might be a few concerns about privacy in some countries, but apparently no complains, at least yet, in Japan.

Have you RAK’d anyone recently?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

This Friday, 3rd of September (the first Friday in September) is RAK day.

RAK stands for “Random Act of Kindness”, doing something for someone you don’t know, out of a warm heart, randomly (eg like paying the toll fee for the car behind you, carrying someones groceries etc).

Some of the Australian media is getting behind this and encouraging people to join in, creating and sharing their RAK stories, the idea being to unite people in goodwill (website here).  In NZ RAK day has been celebrated since 2005.

In the USA, three similar days are:

Pay It Forward Day
2010: April 29
www.payitforwardday.com

World Kindness Day
2010: November 13

Random Acts of Kindness Week
2011: February 14-20

On the one hand it feels abit of a shame that we need to create a day, to remind ourselves to act the way we all should, daily.  On the other hand, every little bit helps and the good feelings  received hopefully carry over throughout the year reminding us and others of our humanity.

Tomorrow is September 1st.  May all readers, and non-readers, have a good month and good  last third of the  year.

You Need a Friend

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

cokemachine_03

To celebrate friendship day in Argentina, Coke introduced a double sized Coke vending machine.  Without a “leg-up” from a friend you can’t reach the coin-slot.  naturally the machine dispensed two drinks, one for you, one for your friend.

Refreshing

A Slice of Nostalgia

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I grew up with Hovis, and great Hovis advertising from CDP in the UK.

Hovis’s latest film is shot in a very nostalgic way, reminiscent of the 70s and 80’s when the brand was an icon, and many of today’s mums would have been little ‘uns.

Coming after the adidas Originals spot below, it’s funny how appealing nostalgia is.  Or am I just growing old?

Please don’t answer.

And for the older folks, here’s a spot they did a couple of years ago celebrating 122 years of being as good as ever.  Lovely stuff.

Millward Brown recently published its fifth annual BrandZ top 100 most valuable ranking.  Technology companies are a dominant force with Google leading the list. The importance of brands is underscored by a 40% increase of the brand value in the past five years. Brands that stand for something and go beyond functional benefits are the biggest gainers.

Please read more about shifting brand values, the growing importance of social media, the risers and losers in this summary report by JWT. Look for your relevant sector and take note of interesting observations and predictions.

If you wish to receive the full BrandZ report or prefer to have sit down with our planning please let me know.
