In this talk Heather brings enetrtainment(humour( and Robotics togtehr in “Data” the Stand-Up Comedian who adjust its show to the audience’s reactions. This is still in its early stages but you can imagine lots more applications for this in the near future.
The Phenomenal Growth of Mobile PhonesTuesday, November 30th, 2010A facinating film by SybaseInc on the growth of mobile phones. More US kids now have one than own a book! The first mobile weighed about 1kg and cost $4,000 (that’s about $20,000 in today’s money). A romp through history and the future in 3 minutes …
The “Golden Age of Media”Wednesday, October 6th, 2010Am always worried about “Golden Ages”, the richness and excitement is often associated with the death of something. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar warned the US publishing indisuty to “Serve Consumers or Watch them walk”. Probably true for any media…. …. and to keep serving customers better Hulu now offers “Hulu Plus” allowing season passes to your favorite TV shows on your portable device. Article here thanks to Ad Age Digital. Sadly for most of us, Hulu isn’t available in our part of the world yet, so we might not be in that media “Golden Age”, for which local media can remain grateful. For now.
A TED Talk – The Quantified SelfFriday, October 1st, 2010Way back, yes before even I was born, Alexander Pope advised ” Know then thyself, presume not God to scan, the proper study of mankind is man“. (Actually about 300 years ago) I think he would enjoy this TED talk by Gary Wolf, a contributing Editor or Wired magazine on the use of (new) scanning technology in human monitoring, health, performance, mood etc. As a Nike+ (The Apple Running sensor) fan, I was fascinated with what is coming, and its just the beginning. Stay healthy. Or get healthy.
Some Stimulation from Seth Godin and Malcolm GladwellWednesday, September 29th, 2010Yesterday I came across a couple of things that I enjoyed and wanted to share. They have a bit in common too. The first was from a TED talk about a year ago given by marketing guru and uber-blogger (and author) Seth Godin on “Why Brands need Tribes“. The concept (and film below) is an interesting one. One thing Seth talks about is “commitment” those who really engage with and are passionate about a brand rather than the mass-market …. and that has an interest parallel with an article by Malcolm Gladwell which follows. Malcolm, of Blink and The Tipping Point fame (among others) wrote an article in the latest edition of the New Yorker entitled “Small Change: Why The Revolution won’t be Tweeted“. You can read it here. The article also talks about genuine commitment and while social media has a role to play in activism, its often a low-level role. Read the article, it makes alot of sense. Its not critisizing Social media, but putting it in perspective. Being a “fan” of a cause for example is very different than being genuinely commited to it … examples he gave were of causes with thousands of fans but how they averaged about 25 cents (10 baht) in their donation level! Using old media, it reminded me of “petitions”. In the old days, when people used to write and the more nerdy of us actually carried two pens/biros around with us, we were often asked to sign “petitions” showing our support for a movement or against it, 1000s of signatures would be collected as a sign of the peoples will and these then passed on to the powers that be to encourage change. A lot of social media today is very similar, it doesn’t take a lot of commitment to tick the “like box” or forward a tweet. Anyway, I’m a fan. Of social media. And pens. And Malcolm Gladwell. Addendum: Thanks to Marie for comments and link to rebuttal in The Economist you can read here and also follow-up with article from The Guardian here. Its good to see this level of debate; has left me feeling rather like rather like Topol in Fiddler on the Roof, “One the one hand, on the other hand, but on the third hand ….”
When Was The Last Time You Thought About Socks?Tuesday, September 28th, 2010Tabio, the Japanese sock brand has entered the UK market and despite limited awareness and distribution, produced this beautiful webfilm, by Projector the digital company behind much of Uniqlo’s awad winning work. At over 6 mins long you might not want to watch it all, but its a beautiful film and once again knocks another nail in the 30s TVCM coffin. Gotta go, got some socks to buy.
How Cool Is This?Tuesday, September 28th, 2010I’m into Nike+, the running sensor that links with iTunes/iPod/iPhone to measure your runs, distance, speed, location, lets you create a training plan, join challenges etc. Now Nokia have teamed up with Burton the snowboarding company to do the icy-equivalent, and more. Don’t ask me where to get one, we don’t get much snow in Thailand, but clever stuff and good to see Nokia battling for the technology edge it once owned.
iTunes 10 and the Death of the CDMonday, September 6th, 2010With 11.7 billion (yes “BILLION”!) songs downloaded on iTunes, by next year it will outrank CD sales in the USA. Interesting enough a couple of days before the new Apple event in SF last week, HMV Japan closed its flagship store in trendy Shibuya. Why? Because of plummeting CD sales. Apple now has 160 milion users with credit card accounts. 160 million! The Apple event launched new iPods, a new Apple TV media player (just $99!) and iTunes 10. iTunes 10 now includes “Ping”, a Social Network for Music. Lots more on new iTunes and Ping below. Me? I was most excited about the new iPod Touch. At an entry price of about 1/4 that of the iPhone 4 but including FaceTime and the new retina display. That seems like “must have” to me. Here’s a demo. Enjoy…. and hope to see you on FaceTime soon.
