The World of Adcraft

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

You’ve hopefully heard of the World of Warcraft, a massively succeful on-line game that pits hoards of fantastic warriors and villains against each other.

Enter Admongo.

Admongo, is a an on-line game for school kids developed by the FTC in the US to educate kids on being more sensitive to the advertising around them – both in a “understanding” (ie deconstructing the message) sense as well as the commercial intent behind all the messages kids are bombarded with each day.

To “win” the game you need to answer a series of  three questions:

Who is responsible for the ad?
What is the ad actually saying?
What does the ad want me to do?

Can read the full Slate article here

Or go and play on-line here

An interesting development, but I can’t see kids playing it outside of school somehow.

Augmented Reality Meets iPhone and Helicopter

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Interesting little video of where video games step off off the computer screen and meet “real life”.

In this case the iPhone controls a helicopter using Augmented (aka Hyper) Reality.

Have seen lots of remote controlled helicopters in Bangkok, but nothing like this, yet.

The Ancient Greeks Would Be Stumped By This One

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Karolos Grohmanm of Yahoo Sports reports the following:

VANCOUVER, Feb 11 (Reuters) – Cricket was cleared to pursue its bid to be included in future Games after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rubberstamped the sport’s recognition on Thursday.

Cricket, powerboating and sports climbing became the latest sports to be officially recognised by the IOC, a status necessary before launching a bid to become part of the Olympic programme.

“The session gave definite recognition to the three federations,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams told reporters.

The three sports can now bid to join the 2020 Olympics as the programme is always determined seven years in advance.

Golf and rugby were latest inclusions in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games when an IOC session voted them in last year.

The decision about new sports for the 2020 Games will be taken at the IOC session in Buenos Aires in 2013 where the host country will also be picked.

My, my, my what is the world coming to?  Apart from Cricket being probably the world’s most incomprehensible sport, lasts days and severely boring, who outside “The Commonwealth” plays it?

Let’s hope sense prevails in 2013.  That or a hard knock to the googlies.

Yes,  a highly personal view – but one from an Anglo-Australian at that!

Got a Crap Job? Take An Example From Alan

Very clever promotion/interactive campaign from Doritos (snacks) from the UK.

Doritos tied together with Guitar Hero (the game).

Here’s the film first …

and the mechanic (courtesy of Contagious) ….

Consumers use a code from the pack and enter it at the campaign site guitarhero.doritos.co.uk. Here, they challenge Alan to a online version of the Guitar Hero game. If they outperform him they enter a draw to win anXbox 360 console with a copy of the new Guitar Hero 5.

The campaign extends via Facebook to include having a Rockstar “make-over” and collecting fans along the way.

Doritos are really good at doing this sort of thing.  In the USA they invited the public to create their own advertising for Doritos with the best entry getting aired in the Superbowl.  The work was good too.

Enjoy, move to the UK, and tune up!

Turn your iPhone to a Mobile gym !!!

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

LONDON – An iPhone developer behind novelty app iFax has developed a new product, which, it claims, turns the iPhone into a mobile gym. Crowded Road has been developing novelty iPhone apps The REPS app, which costs £1.79, is billing itself as Nintendo Wii Fit for the iPhone, simply by using the device as a free weight.

The app enables users to set weight loss targets and includes a real-time rep counter, which calculates how many calories have been burnt and alerts users to how many reps they have completed by vibrate or sound. Users can also use the app while listening to the iPod music on their iPhone.

It also includes motivational audio messages from a personal trainer, which are more akin to the drill sergeant from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket than TV’s Mr Motivator.

Crowded Road, the app’s developer, said: “Simply curl your iPhone/iPod up and down like you would a free weight and watch the calories drop in real time.”
