That’s Some Very Special Water

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

If you’ve never been to Tasmania (Tassie) you might not appreciate how special and pure nature is there.

Its the pure water that goes into James Boag’s beer that makes it rather special.

This spot just took the Clio Grand Prix as best TV ad.

Cheers

YouTube’s 5th Birthday (part of the world’s No.1 Brand).

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

YouTube started back in May 2005 and is now celebrating its fifth anniversary.

Started by 3 former Paypal employees, it was acquired by Google in 2006.

In just five years its gone from nothing to now getting 2 BILLION VIEWS PER DAY.

2 Billion!

A short history of some of the milestones below, including HD, 3D and mobile.

Being part of Google, it was interesting to see Simon’s article on “Google TV” a couple of days ago.  YouTube/Google will soon be offering movies and other full-length entertainment content, some free, some not.

Interestingly Millward Brown’s study on Global Top Brands, put Google at no 1 (April 2010) with an estimated value of $114 Billion.

Google is now 12 years old.

The TV (r)evolution – according to Google

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Google’s world domination has taken another leap forward with Google TV. Wait, hang on, isn’t this the same as hooking your TV onto the internet and surfing the internet via your digital TV? From their video, it seems that Google TV is an optimized search engine made for the TV platform.

Current details about how you can access Google TV suggest either hooking a box onto your TV, or buying a TV with this built in (Sony perhaps?). Will this revolutionize our TV watching? Or merely the first step in blurring the lines between the functions of a desktop computer and a TV set. In any case, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

More information can be found on Google TV’s website.

Women seek online communities to validate purchases

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

We’ve believed it all along, but now some studies have found this to be true as well – brands engaging with their customers online with a direct incentive works! Things like online coupons,  contextual selling, peer comments – these are all very easily done via online and does not need to take the form of complicated websites.

The joint study from iVillage and SheSpeaks highlights that interaction between women through online community Web sites, forums and message boards have a “dramatic” influence on driving product preference, loyalty, and purchase.

Online coupons and customer reviews continue to influence purchases. Women are 77% more likely to look for products and 67% more likely to purchase them in a store after reading online reviews on a community forum or message board.”

The World of Adcraft

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

You’ve hopefully heard of the World of Warcraft, a massively succeful on-line game that pits hoards of fantastic warriors and villains against each other.

Enter Admongo.

image-home-logo

Admongo, is a an on-line game for school kids developed by the FTC in the US to educate kids on being more sensitive to the advertising around them – both in a “understanding” (ie deconstructing the message) sense as well as the commercial intent behind all the messages kids are bombarded with each day.

To “win” the game you need to answer a series of  three questions:

Who is responsible for the ad?
What is the ad actually saying?
What does the ad want me to do?

Can read the full Slate article here

Or go and play on-line here

An interesting development, but I can’t see kids playing it outside of school somehow.

i love typography

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Some of you may know that I actually started in this business as a designer. And as most designers will agree – Typography is the corner stone of great design. It saddens me to see that many of today’s digital designers seem to have lost the art or seem less interested in typography than they should. In case you’re that rare few (designers) that loves type and prefer to view beautiful web pages, here’s a great article from the good folks at Design Cubicle to help you along the way.
